What is Legionnaires Disease?
Legionnaires disease is an infectious disease caused by bacteria belonging to the Genus Legionella. Infection is caused by breathing in small droplets of water contaminated by the bacteria. Although present in nature, engineered water systems such as domestic and process plant, provide an excellent breeding ground for the bacteria.
What are my Responsibilities?
Under Health and Safety Law it is your duty to consider the risks from Legionella that could affect your employees and members of the public and take suitable precautions, which include;
- Identify and assess the risk
- Prepare and implement a course of action to prevent or control the risk
- Appoint a person to be managerially responsible
- Keep records and ensure effective control
